Jeju Island

The beautiful volcanic island of Jeju at the southern end of Korea is home of both the tallest mountain and the country’s only Crater Lake, designated Natural Heritage Sites. Locals residents are a little isolated so the local culture and language are a little different. Wildlife and waterfall scenery here are unique and impressive, especially during cherry blossom season between August and October.

Gyeongju Historic Area

For over one thousand years, Gyeongju was the capital of the Shilla dynasty dated from BC 57 to AD 935. There are two main world cultural heritages sites in Gyeongju. One is the Seokguram Grotto and Bulguksa Temple area, regarded as the culmination of Korean Buddhism, and the other is Gyeongju’s historical heritage region, which contains a wealth of artifacts dating back to the Shilla dynasty.

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and Joint Security Area (JSA). The border between North and South Korea, and the only place visitable from both sides. Famous as one of the most heavily guarded areas in the world the isolation forced upon it from the military situation inadvertently created a nature reserve with many unique forms of wildlife. Other sites include several military tunnels made from the North Korean side.
